Torquay

Heart of the English Riviera

Torquay first developed as a fashionable seaside resort in the early 19th Century.  Renowned for its healthy climate, it earned the nickname of the English Riviera along with favourable comparisons with the resort of Montpelier in France.  Its name originates from it being the quay of the ancient port of Torre.  The old Torre Abbey has just been restored and this summer is a must see place as its gardens now include a section on poisonous plants of the like that inspired many of Agatha Christie's fictional murders!

Today the focus of life in the town is Torquay's waterfront.  Amble along the palm-lined promenade, through the sea front gardens, home to some attractive buildings such as the Pavillion and admire the sleek craft berthed in the international Marina, with its illuminated bridge.  A choice of boat excursions are available from the Marina.

Aside from pavement cafes, restaurants and shops, you'll find the Living Coast attraction at Beacon Quay, home to many varieties of seabird as well as a delightful group of resident penguins.

Just off the main thoroughfare is Cockington Country Park and Gardens, a magnificent area of lakes, woods and gardens and a quaint old village complete with Blacksmiths.  A coach and horse ride here is a treat and Cockington is an unexpected and delightful alternative to the seafront.

Torquay has strong literary connections, the most notable resident being Dame Agatha Christie, who spent her honeymoon at The Grand Hotel.  You can see a lot of her memorabilia as well as a host of other interesting artifacts and treasures at the Torquay Museum.  Turn to our Literary page for further information on famous figures who spent productive time in Torquay.
