Devon is perhaps best known for its southwest coast, known as the English Riviera. The maritime towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, that line the 22 miles of English Riviera coastline, offer some of the best beaches in the county and are home to top attractions such as Paignton Zoo, the English Riviera Global Geopark (part of the Jurassic coast), Cockington Country Park and the Agatha Christie Mile to name but a few.
Devon also has a proud maritime history and was home to seafaring legends, such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh. This history has continued and officers of the Royal Navy still receive their basic training in Dartmouth.
Dartmoor - a walker's paradise - is at the heart of the county, with its dramatic landscapes, remains of ancient neolithic and bronze age settlements and herds of wild ponies.
Exeter - originally founded by the Romans in AD75 and called 'Isca Dumnoniorum' - is home to a spectactular cathedral, highly regarded university and excellent shopping. Plymouth also provides plenty of scope for a terrific day out and the Barbican (from where the Pilgrim Fathers set out for the New World) and National Marine Aquarium are well worth a visit. A walk along Plymouth Hoe (where Drake played his famous game of bowls before defeating the Spanish Armada) offers stunning views of Plymouth Sound and Drake's Island.
Last...but by no means least...Devon is famous for its Devonshire Cream Teas, a very special treat that you can enjoy on the terrace of The Grand!
