About Torquay

The heart of the English Riviera...

Torquay first developed as a fashionable seaside resort in the early 19th Century.  Renowned for its healthy climate, it earned the nickname of the English Riviera.  Torquay’s name originates from it being the quay of the ancient port of Torre.  The old Torre Abbey has been restored and is a “must see” place. Its gardens now include a section on poisonous plants - the likes of which inspired many of Agatha Christie's fictional murders - and the Abbey itself regularly features artwork by famous artists, including Damien Hirst’s most controversial work!

The focus of life in the town is Torquay's waterfront.  From The Grand Hotel, amble along the palm-lined promenade, through the sea front gardens towards the marina and enjoy the pavement cafes, restaurants and shops.  From the marina, with its illuminated bridge, a choice of boat excursions are available that include trips to Dartmouth and Greenway House and Gardens, Agatha Christies’ former home.

The famous Princess Theatre shows a variety of shows, many of which are on tour from the West End, including internationally popular offerings such as Legally Blonde.

With the rugged beauty of Dartmoor on the doorstep and the English Riviera coastline to explore, Torquay and The Grand Hotel offer a perfect match for visitors, whether for work, play or leisure.
