Enjoy all things Agatha at Greenway House, Galmpton this January
Agatha Christie (née Miller) was born in Torquay and grew up there in a Victorian mansion called Ashfield. As a local girl, Agatha enjoyed all aspects of an English Riviera social life: roller-skating along the pier; going to dances, dinners and balls; and bathing in the sea. Agatha Christie (known locally by her married name Mrs Mallowan, she spent her honeymoon right here at the Grand hotel in suite now named after her) spent many happy years at Greenway, her beloved holiday home. She and her family would retreat here once her latest book was complete, to enjoy each other’s company in relaxed surroundings.
The woodland garden is perfect for a winter walk. Crunching through leaves, walking through tall grasses and bamboo, and splashing in muddy puddles all keep kids entertained. From the Boathouse you could count the boats on the river, which is always bustling with activity; trawlers, river cruises, a paddle steamer and kayakers can regularly be seen. It’s also a great place to watch wildlife, such as the occasional seal in the river. The Battery is complete with cannon, which captures the imagination.
Cockington Country Park
