Torquay first developed as a fashionable seaside resort in the early 19th Century. Renowned for its healthy climate, it earned the nickname of the English Riviera. Torquay’s name originates from it being the quay of the ancient port of Torre. The old Torre Abbey has been restored and is a “must see” place.
