The local area of Torquay holds pride of place on the English Riviera, and it’s 22 miles of stunning coastline offer not only some of the best beaches in Devon and some superb walks, but also comprise of the world’s very first urban UNESCO-designated Global Geopark. Geoparks, like National Parks, are special places that have stunning landscapes and heritage.
There are no less than 5 beaches recommended by the Marine Conservation Society, each within 5 miles of The Grand, and there are plenty of excellent attractions in the local area.
Outdoor activities include boat trips along the coast to the historic harbour towns of Brixham and Dartmouth, sailing, kayaking, fishing, diving and cycling – and the beautiful Dartmoor National Park is an easy drive away.

There are plenty of local attractions including Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts, Babbacombe Model Village, Greenway House (once home to Agatha Christie), two steam railways and much more, in addition to the 22 miles of coastline with gloriously sandy beaches. The nearest beach is directly opposite the hotel and is perfect for swimming, sandcastle building and rock pool exploring!
Young salty sea dogs will be spoilt for choice as there are plenty of water sports on offer, including canoeing, sailing and sea kayaking. Nature lovers will enjoy a day out at Occombe Farm and the exciting programme of walks and events run by the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust.
